Four of Australia’s Best Wine Regions

As the world’s fifth largest producer of wine, Australia has developed a reputation for consistently producing red and white wines have a brilliant appearance, sound taste, and complex bouquet. Australia is home to approximately 2,000 wine vineyards. While some are large, many are small, family owned wineries that are divided among the different regions. Although they are difficult to narrow down due to the wide selection of world class wineries, the following examines four of the best wine regions in Australia.

Barossa

Believed to produce some of the most popular and recognizable brands, such as Jacob’s Creek, Henschke, and Penfolds, Barossa is located in South Australia. Barossa includes Barossa Valley and Eden Valley and is one of Australia’s first wine producing regions. The growing season runs usually runs from September through April. Although they tend to yield a low number of grapes, they are vibrant in color and are full of flavor that includes elements of eucalyptus and mint.

Barossa Valley is known for flavorful red wines frequently made from Grenache and Shiraz, while Eden Valley is famous for exquisite, long-lived Rieslings. Overall, the region is known for gutsy wines and hearty and delicious foods with a German influence.

Yarra Valley

Yarra Valley is known for mouth-watering food and a variety of fine wines, especially sparkling wines and Pinot Noir. Yarra Valley was the first wine growing region in Victoria and has a history that extends more than 160 years. Today there are more than 80 wineries in the region that have established an international reputation for producing premium quality wines including complex Pinot Noir, fine chardonnay, and world class Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine season begins in early March and typically ends in early May.

Although Pinot Noir is often a challenge to grow in most parts of the world, it thrives in the cool climate of the Yarra Valley and is the most commonly planted grape in the area. While lighter in color than other dry red wines, Pinot Noir maintains an intense and unparalleled complexity and is often identified by its intoxicating aromas.

Hunter Valley

Located north of Sydney in New South Wales, Hunter Valley is home to more than 150 wineries and cellar doors that have been producing a unique range of wines for over 180 years. As a result, it is considered the historic heart of Australia’s wine making. It is best regarded for its Hunter Valley Semillion, a dry white wine that is best when it is allowed to mature over time. When young, it has a lemony, grassy, and crisp flavor. However, as it matures, the flavor becomes more complex with hints of honey and toasty vanilla.

Although only introduced to the region in the 1960s, the chardonnay produced in Hunter Valley has become popular among wine connoisseurs. While the flavor differs slightly from one winery to another, they frequently have a peaches and cream flavor. However, some wineries offer a variation that has a strong oaky flavor. Hunter Valley has a long wine growing season that lasts from late October to early April.

Margaret River

Although Margaret River was settled in the 1830s by the Europeans, it did not begin producing wines until the 1970s when scientific research found that its Mediterranean climate and gravelly, yet sandy soil were ideal for growing grapes from the end of February to late April. Currently it is home to more than 150 wineries. Located in the southwestern region of Australia, it is regarded as one of the best places in world for producing chardonnay of exquisite character, length, and intensity. However, they are not overly heavy and cloying.

It is also well known for its cabernet blends and cabernet sauvignon, which are appreciated for long cellar lives, multilayered complexity, and dense fruit flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon was the first wine to receive acclaim for their high quality in the Margaret River Wine Region. They are known for having a sweet core, often with faintly gravelly or earthy tannin.

Australia is known for producing a diverse assortment of exquisite wines in a wide range of prices that seem to increase in quality every year. This makes it very difficult to choose the best wine regions in the country.
